Book Review: The Art of Nausicaa - Watercolor Impressions

Art Book Review:

The Art of Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind: Watercolor Impressions

By Hayao Miyazaki, published in 2007. The hardcover book measures about 12” x 9.5” and is 1” thick, with 208 pages.

The contents section includes: Illustrations for manga, illustrations for the film, motifs that inspired Nausicaa, and a bonus section with a selection from Hayao Miyazaki’s sketchbook. The bonus section was very small, but a bonus is a bonus! Throughout the book there is a lot of commentary by Hayao Miyazaki, so the book gives a great deal of insight into Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

I can tell you right now that I love this book. The Art of Nausicaa has many full color illustrations, as the title implies it focuses on watercolor, with comments and information for most of the more detailed paintings. There are some really beautiful pictures, a lot of sketches with color added, featuring characters, scenery, concept art, and a lot of added content.

Before I got this book I was hesitant, I hadn’t bought many art books or any of Hayao Miyazaki’s art books. I found some reviews but I didn’t really find anything that gave specifics about the content, other than there are a lot of watercolor pictures and the size ect. I’m SO glad I did get it, because it’s awesome. There are a lot of details included, some great art, and really inspiring watercolors. If you’re a fan of Hayao Miyazaki, and the movie Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, I highly recommend this book. Especially if you’re interested in watercolor art specifically, either as an artist or admirer. It’s true that you can find a lot of the illustrations and his artwork online, but the book has a lot more. Plus it’s a very sturdy and nice size hardcover art book, something that I’ve really enjoyed actually holding and flipping through. Bottom line, it’s a great art book with a lot to offer.

If you’re interested in buying the book, I bought mine on Amazon, you can find it here:
